Mission Statement

The mission of the Howard-Suamico School District’s Safe Routes to School(SRTS) program is to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school safely and enjoyably. The Howard-Suamico School District will partner with students, parents, law enforcement, Village of Howard staff and residents to identify and overcome the barriers of walking and biking to school to improve the overall well-being of our community

What is Safe Routes to School

SRTS programs encourage children ages K-8 to walk and bike to school by creating safer walking and biking routes. These programs are funded through the revised federal transportation act which in turn provides funding to state departments of transportation. SRTS Programs improve walking and biking travel options, promote healthier lifestyles in children at an early age and decrease auto-related emissions near schools. Grants require 20-30% be used for the education of safe and healthy walking and biking.

The current SRTS project, focusing on
Forest Glen Elementary, Lineville Intermediate and
Bay View Middle Schools will:

  • Educate students, teachers, parents, resident, motorists and law enforcement officers about safe walking, bicycling and driving

  • Provide safe walking and bicycling resources

  • Collect data about behaviors and attitudes while walking and bicycling to school

  • Support special events related to walking and bicycling
