Construction and Project Completion

Construction Begins: March 2022

The projects will be competitively bid to encourage the use of local subcontractors and suppliers. Our priority during construction will be the safety of our students and staff. We will work to phase district-wide construction throughout the school year to ensure a safe construction site without impacting education.

Once Design Development concludes, the design process moves to the final stage, which requires the creation of detailed construction documents and instructions for all aspects of every project. This set of documents are used for public bidding with trades and subcontractors and are referenced throughout the building process.

Design Development

August-November 2021

The second design phase is called design development and involves coordination with consultants and district staff for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems. All details related to colors schemes, fixtures, furniture, and materials are also finalized. Ongoing budget review with the construction managers informs design, with modifications made if necessary to maintain the referendum-approved budget.

Schematic Design

April-July 2021

Following the approval of the Invest & Renew Referendum on April 6, 2021, the architectural design process began for all districtwide projects. The most significant design work is required for the renovation and additions at Bay View Middle School and Forest Glen Elementary School.

The process includes three distinct phases to advance preliminary concepts developed prior to the referendum, with the first known as schematic design. This phase is currently underway and has involved deep collaboration with EUA, our architectural partner, and two staff Visionary Teams from Bay View and Forest Glen. These teams are focused now on developing visual building drawings and floor plans to provide definition of all functional interior and exterior spaces.

What are Visionary Teams?

EUA has been working with district representatives and visionary teams from Bay View and Forest Glen. Visionary teams include staff representatives from Bay View and Forest Glen who work closely with EUA through a series of meetings to develop design ideas that reflect HSSD’s vision, mission, and the Graduate Profile objectives. Input from staff (and students too!) from each building, as well as district leadership, are guiding and informing the design solutions that will transform each school in the years ahead.
