Emma Nagel, Bay Port 2020, is back in the halls of her former high school. This time she’s not a student, but a resource and a source of strength for others. Emma has been working as an intern alongside Deb Hebert and the Bay Port school counselors, focusing on student mental health. “My overall goal is to raise awareness around adolescent mental health while creating a safe, supportive space where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and needs,” said Emma. In May, Emma will be graduating from Drake University with her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy.
During Emma’s first four years at Drake, she played Division I soccer while studying Health Sciences on the pre-Occupational Therapy track. Back at Bay Port, she has been helping coach girls soccer this season. “Playing soccer and basketball at Bay Port prepared me for college in so many ways,” said Emma. “Being an athlete not only helped me continue playing soccer at the collegiate level, but also taught me valuable skills like time management, teamwork, and how to balance academics, athletics, and a social life. I took away many important lessons from my time at Bay Port.”
After graduating, Emma plans to take the NBCOT exam, which is the national certification exam required to become a licensed occupational therapist. “I want to share and voice the importance of treating people with kindness, especially to high school students,” said Emma. “One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that people often carry struggles you can’t see from the outside. Life can be difficult, so if you can be anything, be kind.”
